Wine me, dine me, Deep Space Nine me.

When it comes to the next generation of the Star Trek franchise, Deep Space 9 stands head and shoulders above the rest for me. With the erratic Voyager forgetting it’s core plot and having no consistent characters, the slow paced Next Generation boldly going nowhere in fifteen years of traveling the stars and Jonathon Archer sucking all charisma out of the screen during Rick Bermans colourless era of pre-Kirk Trek, DS9 was the only show to have heart and personality.

Is it easier to succeed…or fail?

D&D

I just returned from my second viewing of The Avengers. It’s a cracking film. It manages to pretty much nail each of the main, and supporting, characters and somehow manages to ensure that the entire ensemble manages to shine. This is no mean feat considering four of the six characters all have their own movie franchises. Hell, even a lot of the secondary characters get their moments. One of the things that a lot of people I have seen it with have agreed on is this; they definitely didn’t fuck it up. It’s gotten me thinking a lot about how easy it would have been to fuck The Avengers (I will not call it Avengers Assemble just because they think us brain dead Brits would get it confused with The Avengers of yore). It would have been damned easy. The history of cinema is littered with the corpses of movie franchises that have been well and truly screwed for one reason or another.

I say street theatre, I of course mean, what the locals call, jakeys; comical locals who will act their socks off to convince you to hand over a ‘tip’. It’s a wonderful experience, and sometimes the experience is so real you end up in hospital afterwards. But some of these guys have to be seen to be believed…

So every Friday Seven for the Weekend will be compiling a list of seven really awesome…things. Just don’t ask why the lists are an odd number like seven, no-one really knows the answer.
